Windows 10 has incredible features, but at the same time, it has its downside. One of its negative sides is the way the operating system executes updates. Cumulative updates are downloaded and installed automatically without the user’s notice. This could be very frustrating and data consuming. Sometimes, these updates accumulate to gigabytes, and when the updates initiate, it consumed huge amount of data, thereby leaving you frustrated.

Windows 10 automatic updates suck. You don’t have to feel bitter about your experience with win10 automatic updates, because in a minute or less, I will walk you through 2 ways on how to stop windows ten automatic update.

Below are two easy ways to stop windows ten automatic updates:

  1. Disable Your Windows Update

What makes window ten automatically update is a service called windows update. All that you need to do is to turn off this update. Turning off this update might be a little bit technical, but I will show you a quick and easy way to go about it.

To disable your windows update, click on win + R and “Run” will open up. Type in “services.msc” and click on OK as shown above. If this is done well, a list of services will display as shown below.

Search for Windows Update, double click on it and a new window will pop up as shown below.

Click on the drop-down at the startup type and select disable or manual. If you choose to disable, automatic updates will be disabled, and if you choose manual, you can update your windows only when you want to.

2. Group Policy Editor

This second method can only work for people using Windows 10 Pro, Education or Enterprise edition.

The way the second option works is different from the first. The way it works is that all security updates will be installed without your permission, but every other update will require your approval before it is updated.

If you have been a window user for a long time just like me, you will know that this is how Windows update usually work in the past.To turn off your automatic updates using group policy editor, press Win + R and then type in “gpedit.msc” and click on OK. Group policy editor will open up, click on Administrative Templates as shown below.

Under Administrative Templates, Select Windows Components and then Windows Update as shown in the image below.

I am glad you have gotten to this stage, it is getting interesting, and you will soon get done.

On getting to Windows Update, choose to configure automatic updates (As shown in the image below)

When you click on Configure Automatic Updates, choose the option on the right to “Configure Automatic Updates.

When you click on Configure Automatic Updates as shown on the image above, a new screen will up, select Notify for download and auto-install as shown on the image below.

Click “Apply” and congratulations, you are good to go. To revert this changes, please follow the same process.
